TOJO, Reithalle, Bern
It's been some time since their last outing, the memorable "Bash" (La Bute). However, there's nothing to hold this lot down. Matt Kimmich, who has an uncanny knack for picking plays that would seem too ambitious for what is, despite appearances, an amateur company, the English Department of Berne University's own Instictive Acts, is directing John Webster's 1613 tragedy, giving it a new and doubtlessly stirring/startling reading.
The play, set in Italy in the 16th century, tells the story of the widowed Duchess of Malfi, who wants to remarry against the will of her powerful brothers. In secret she marries her steward Antonio, but is eventually found out when she gives birth to their child. The brothers vow revenge and the stage is set for murder, madness and mayhem.
One of the most popular plays of its time, the King's Men, the theatre company for which Webster had written the play, kept it in their repertoire for seventeen years, it has remained a classic to this day, with different eras focusing on different aspects. For more information look here.
