Creative writing activity for group/workshop
to provide a light-hearted, zany opening to a course
to stimulate imagination
whole group sitting in a circle
‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’ as a title
one A5 or A6 piece of paper (that can be folded) per participant
This activity will yield nothing of substance but the resulting titles, of which noone has ownership, can provide intriguing titles or used in another activity
It may help to write the title of this activity or the title in the ‘Example’ on the board to illustrate the steps.
At the top of the piece of paper, write down ‘The’ and an adjective. Make the adjective a slightly unusual one. Fold the paper over and pass it on.
Write a noun under the fold, followed by ‘of’. The noun can be abstract or quite concrete. Fold the paper over and pass it on.
Write down another noun, this time ideally an abstract one. Fold the paper over and pass it on.
Write down either an adverbial of time, (e.g. ‘in spring’, or space, e.g. ‘in the back garden’. (Other possibilities include almost any preposition phrase as they are all post-modifiers …) Pass the paper on.
Read out all the titles generated like this and note the ones that you like.
