Almost exactly ten years after thefirst outing of
style="font-style: italic;">Aladdin and the Magic Lamp the
tireless folk of the English Department Theatre Group have decided to
present the revamped and updated version of this Panto, this time in a
rather prestigous
href="http://www.theater-am-kaefigturm.ch/img/pdf/Spielplan1.pdf">Theater
am Käfigturm, one of Bern's best-loved boulevard theatre venues.
The tale of hapless Aladdin suffering from unrequited love for Princess
Jasmin in an environment of intrigue dominated by the power hungry
(Vizier Janataar, who wants to become Sultan) and the greedy (Wendy
Shoe-Fitzwearit, who aims to exploit the oil reserves of the Island of
Zobazzar) was written in the aftermath of 9/11 but has lost little of
its topicality in this respect since.
This is not to say that this is a political play in any shape of form.
It does contain a few satirical references but once again is family
entertainment with a lot of audience participation, booing the baddies,
shouted contradictions like "oh yes it is" - "oh no, it isn't",
warnings to the goodies ("he's behind you!"), with the usual amount of
cross-dressing and the enchanting music, newly composed by Simon Reber.
Quite a few new songs have been added, making this a great evening out.
The performances are scheduled for
Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 8, 9,
10 December at 20.00
